Exploring the Sound of Madagascar: Rado Fentsu Tests MSP Pickups on the Valiha

Have you ever heard of the Valiha

A traditional instrument from Madagascar, the Valiha is a tubular zither typically made of bamboo with metal strings. It produces a crystalline, ethereal sound reminiscent of a harp.

We are thrilled to announce that Rado Fentsu, a renowned Valiha player based in France, recently conducted testing with our MSP Pickup.

■ Feedback from Rado Fentsu

"I would like to thank you once again for your trust and for giving me the opportunity to test the MSP Pickup. It is a real pleasure to discover your work.

After my first tests, I wanted to share my impressions with you.

The MSP Pickup is a truly high-quality microphone , easy to use and incredibly faithful to the natural sound of the instruments.

On my bamboo valiha, I was genuinely impressed. This is the first time a contact pickup has been able to capture the color, resonance, and warm authenticity of the valiha with such precision. I tested several placement options, and the position shown in the attached photo is the one that gives the best sonic result in my opinion.

As for the metal Marovany, the experience was a bit more challenging. Because the pickup is magnetic, placing it inside the instrument is difficult, as the magnets tend to stick to the metal surface at the bottom. I will continue exploring different placements to find the most balanced and musical sound.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the results: the MSP Pickup brings a new dimension to my instruments and opens up exciting sonic possibilities.

I will also record some sound samples and make more complete videos, which I will share with you later.

Thank you again for your generosity and for this collaboration, which truly means a lot to me."

■ Looking Ahead

Rado suggested adding a mute switch to the cable for easier handling during live performances. While building a switch directly into the pickup system poses technical challenges, we at 123sound.jp are excited to test how external gear, such as foot pedals, can meet these professional needs.

We are honored to support such a unique instrument and look forward to the new sonic dimensions this collaboration brings!
